How to choose a lightweight chair or scooter

A useful comparison starts with your routine: where you go, how you travel and what you need to lift.

Folding electric wheelchair or mobility scooter?

A folding electric wheelchair uses a joystick, while a mobility scooter uses a tiller. Compare the seating position, controls and turning space, as well as how each model folds. A demonstration lets you try these differences before you choose.

What will you actually lift?

Check whether a quoted weight includes batteries, cushions and removable parts. For a chair that splits apart, compare the heaviest section you need to lift. Complete weight and lifting weight answer different questions.

Product weight and packed shipping weight are different measurements: include batteries, accessories and packaging when planning delivery.

A good fit starts with a tape measure

Measure the narrowest part of your boot opening, the depth inside and the height available. Compare those measurements with the folded product, allowing room to lift and position it. Check whether the seat or batteries must be removed.

Plan the journey as well as the destination

For flights, ask your airline to confirm acceptance of the exact chair and battery configuration before booking. Keep the manufacturer’s battery documentation to hand. We do not use a blanket “airline approved” promise.

For everyday travel, consider gradients, surfaces, doorway widths, charging and how the product will be transported. Choose using the manufacturer’s limits and a demonstration where possible.

Take time with a bigger decision

A heavier powerchair needs its own transport and delivery plan. For XSTO, compare the exact models and arrange a suitable demonstration before deciding. The lightest product is not automatically the right product for you.
